German director Werner Herzog will be the subject of a retrospective at The Barbican in September.

Five films - Aguirre, Wrath Of God, Fitzcarraldo, Cobra Verde, Grizzly Man and Encounters At The End Of The World– have been chosen for their exploration of hostile environments as part of the Barbican’s Radical Nature exhibition.

The programme ends with a documentary double bill including Herzog’s most recent feature, Encounters At The End Of The World, a study of some of the colourful characters who have been drawn to explore and live in the Antarctic.

Volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer, who features in the film, will host a Q&A after the screening.

Herzog is judging a competition, run by film-makers group Shooting People and distributor Revolver Entertainment, as part of the programme. The winning film will be screened in the final day.
