Skyfall surprises with eight nominations; other top nominees include Argo, Anna Karenina, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty.

As the BAFTA nominations were announced this morning in London, Lincoln leads the pack with ten nominations. Les Misérables and Life of Pi follow closely with nine each; Skyfall has eight nominations, especially strong for a Bond film (the franchise has won only two BAFTAs in its history); Argo has seven; Anna Karenina has six.
Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty have five apiece; The Master and Amour have four; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Silver Linings Playbook have three each; Hitchcock, Rust And Bone, The Imposter and McCullin have two each.
Leading distributors are Universal with 25 nominations and Fox with 24.
The Master is notable for its three acting noms for Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams; in addition to Original Screenplay.
Snubs
Notable snubs include Quartet and The Impossible being shut out and Mike Newell’s Great Expectations only garnering a nod for costume. British directors Tom Hooper has not been nominated for Best Director for Les Mis nor Joe Wright for Anna Karenina. Also, Steven Spielberg wasn’t nominated for Best Director for Lincoln. Box office hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is only nominated for Outstanding British Film despite its top British cast.
Lauded American indies Beasts of the Southern Wild and Moonrise Kingdom only managed one nomination each in the screenplay categories. Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t manage a Supporting Actor nomination for Django Unchained, and that film was also shutout from Best Film. The Dark Knight Rises only managed a single nomination, for visual effects.
There were also no nominations for Robert Zemeckis’ Flight, Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers or Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio. The last two had performed well at this year’s BIFAs.
Foreign nominees
French actresses Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone) and Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) are nominated in the Best Actress category as well as their films being recognised in Best Film Not In The English Language. The other foreign nominees are Headhunters, The Hunt and Untouchable. Unlike the Oscars, BAFTA allows more than one film from each country (for example, France represented by both Rust And Bone and Untouchable.)
The Documentary Category, reintroduced by BAFTA last year, has nominees The Imposter, McCullin, Marley, Searching For Sugar Man and West of Memphis. Three of those films, McCullin, Marley and West of Memphis, aren’t on the Oscar shortlist.
The Animated Film nominees are Brave, Frankenweenie and ParaNorman. Films left off the list include Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians.
The British Debut category includes The Imposter, McCullin, Dexter Fletcher’s directorial debut Wild Bill and more surprising choices James Bobin for directing The Muppets, and Tina Gharavi for writing and directing the little-seen I Am Nasrine.
Top nominees
Of the top three nominees, Lincoln is nominated for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated for Leading Actor, Tommy Lee Jones is nominated for Supporting Actor and Sally Field is nominated for Supporting Actress.
Les Misérables is nominated for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair and Sound. Hugh Jackman is nominated for Leading Actor and Anne Hathaway for Supporting Actress.
The nine nominations for Life of Pi are in the categories Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Special Visual Effects and Director for Ang Lee.
The Awards, hosted by Stephen Fry, will be held on Feb 10 at London’s Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
Lincoln also leads the Golden Globe nominations; all eyes will now be on tomorrow’s Oscar nominations.
