The Doha Film Institute is cancelling the March 2014 edition of its first Qumra Doha Film Festival.
Qumra will now hold its inaugural edition in 2015.
A DFI spokesperson issued this statement: “Following the success of the inaugural Ajyal Youth Film Festival by the Doha Film Institute, which was marked by an unprecedented community involvement in film appreciation and education , the Institute is realigning its objectives for 2014.
“We have decided to reschedule Qumra Doha Film Festival to 2015. This new timeframe enables us to better target our resources and provide increased educational and financing opportunities to support global storytelling, nurture upcoming talent and enhance film appreciation both regionally and internationally.
“We remain committed to our mission to serve as the definitive platform in this region to create a dynamic local film industry.”
Some industry sources speculate the move comes after DFI overspent on Ajyal.
DFI previously ran the Doha Tribeca Film Festival each October or November. In April 2013, Doha and Tribeca announced the end of their partnership and in May the organisation announced the creation of the two Ajyal and Qumra festivals.
