Xavier Dolan’s I Killed My Mother (J’ai Tue Ma Mere) has been selected as Canada’s submission for the best foreign language film at the 82nd Academy Awards in March 2010.
Written and directed and produced by its 19-year-old star, the film swept the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes this year, winning the Art Cinema prize, the Regards Jeunes award and the SACD trophy. Dolan plays the son opposite Anne Dorval’s mother in an exploration of a turbulent relationship.
The film was selected through a 24-person pan-Canadian committee representing industry associations and government agencies. The nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced on February 2, 2010.
Four Canadian films have been selected among the final nominees in the history of the award. Deepa Mehta’s Water and three films by Denys Arcand: The Decline Of The American Empire, Jesus Of Montreal and The Barbarian Invasions, which won the prize in 2003.
