Birdman is fast emerging as Fox Searchlight’s poster child of the season as the New Regency production emerged top of the pile on December 11 with seven 72nd Golden Globe nominations.

Birdman

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film earned kudos for best film in a comedy or musical, best actor in the same category for Michael Keaton, supporting acting nods for Edward Norton and Emma Stone, director, screenplay and score.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave five nominations to IFC Films’ Boyhood, as well as to TWC’s The Imitation Game, while Gone Girl, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Selma and The Theory Of Everything earned four apiece.

There were total shut-outs for Unbroken, American Sniper and Top Five, while Interstellar earned a sole nomination for Hans Zimmer’s score.

Timothy Spall was conspicuous in his absence in the acting stakes for Mr Turner as was Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night.

The Whiplash camp must also be feeling somewhat neglected as Damien Chazelle’s lauded film emerged with only one nod for its most obvious pick – best supporting actor JK Simmons.

The five foreign language nominees are Sweden’s Force Majeure, Israel’s Gett: The Trial Of Viviane Amsalem Gett, Poland’s Ida, Russia’s Leviathan and Estonia’s Tangerines.

The Theory Of Everything star Eddie Redmayne is in the mix for best actor in a dramatic film alongside fellow British talent Benedict Cumberbatch for The Imitation Game and David Oyelowo for Selma. Rounding out the category are Steve Carell for Foxcatcher and Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler.

Redmayne’s Theory co-star Felicity Jones is also recognised in the dramatic actress contest and competes against Jennifer Aniston for Cake, Julianne Moore for Still Alice, Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl and Reese Witherspoon for Wild.

Moore is also in play in the comedy or musical actress for Maps To The Stars where her rivals include British stars Emily Blunt for Into The Woods and Helen Mirren for The Hundred-Foot Journey. Amy Adams is nominated for Big Eyes as is Quvenzhane Wallis for Annie.

The Imitation Game’s Keira Knightley is in contention in the supporting actress category and will vie for top honours with Boyhood’s Patricia Arquette, Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year and Meryl Streep for Into The Woods.

Norton’s supporting actor rivals are Robert Duvall for The Judge, Ethan Hawke for Boyhood, Mark Ruffalo for Foxcatcher and JK Simmons for Whiplash.

Iñárritu will contest the best director field with Wes Anderson, Ava DuVerney, David Fincher and Richard Linklater.

Fox Searchlight is fast emerging as the dominant distributor of the season and, just as it did at the SAG nominations earlier this week, it led the studio field with 12 Globes nominations.

The Weinstein Company was next on 10, then SPC and Twentieth Century Fox on six apiece and Focus Features, IFC Films and Paramount on five each.

The ceremony will take place in Beverly Hills on January 11, 2015.
