Boyhood flew the flag on a strong night for independent cinema as IFC Films’ coming-of-age tale prevailed in the motion picture drama, director and supporting actress categories at the 72nd Golden Globes awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday night (January 11).
Fox Searchlight’s The Grand Budapest Hotel earned corresponding honours in the comedy or musical section on an occasion completely lacking in surprises — even Prince’s hush-hush role as an awards presenter was leaked beforehand — and reinforced the notion that awards season continues to be a place where independent cinema comes into its own.
Eddie Redmayne was named best dramatic actor for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in Focus Features’ The Theory Of Everything after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association bestowed best comedy or musical honours on a highly emotional Michael Keaton for his role as an actor on the comeback trail in Searchlight/New Regency’s Birdman.
Richard Linklater was named best director for Boyhood, whose campaign strategists will use the publicity to add fuel to an Academy Awards campaign that was further buoyed by Patricia Arquette’s triumph in the supporting actress section.
Boyhood emerged as the biggest winner with three prizes, followed by Birdman and The Theory Of Everything on two apiece. IFC Films, Fox Searchlight and Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) each earned three awards. There were shut-outs for The Imitation Game and Foxcatcher, while Selma earned a single honour for best original song.
Oscar front-runner Julianne Moore claimed the best actress in a drama prize for SPC’s Still Alice for her role as an academic in the grip of early onset Alzheimer’s.
Earlier in the evening Amy Adams collected the best actress in a comedy or musical award for her role as artist Margaret Keane in TWC’s Big Eyes. JK Simmons won best supporting actor for his performance in SPC’s Whiplash.
Alejandro González Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo earned best screenplay honours for Birdman.
Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Russian tale Leviathan took the best foreign language film (SPC releases in the US) and DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon 2, released in the US through Fox, won the best animation prize.
Johann Johannsson earned the best score prize for The Theory of Everything, while Common and John Legend collected the best original song award for Glory from Selma, which Paramount distributes in the US.
The television awards were punctuated by high profile wins for streaming platforms Netflix and Amazon, whose House Of Cards and Transparent earned awards.
Kevin Spacey delivered one of the highlights of the night when he accepted his best performance by an actor in a television series, drama prize — his first Golden Globe win in eight nominations — in character as Francis Underwood from House Of Cards.
George Clooney accepted the previously announced Cecil B DeMille Award.
