UPDATED APRIL 7: Emilio Martinez-Lazaro’s rom-com Ocho Apellidos Vascos will become on April 7 the biggest Spanish-language release of all time in Spain and Universal’s biggest release in the territory.
The film, known as Spanish Affairs in English translation, was expected to overtake the €24.8m final tally of The Orphanage on April 7 after a further $7m (€5.1m) from 402 venues propelled the running total to $34.1m (€24.6m).
Ocho, produced by Telecinco Cinema, La Zona Film and Wowalski, held on to pole position in Spain for the fourth weekend in a row. Clara Lago and Rafa Dani Rovira play star-crossed lovers from politically opposed regions.
In a further display of potency after 24 days in release, it beat new arrivals Noah and Rio 2 and rounds out the weekend with 45% market share.
Ocho scored a smash opening weekend in March on $3.9m (€2.83) from 400 screens in its first three days.
