Following the disappointing launch of Sony’s sci-fi in North America, the weekend ahead will reveal whether Will Smith has retained his lustre at the international box office.

Sony Pictures Releasing International unleashes After Earth in 60 territories after a solid number two debut in South Korea over the last session generated $2.7m from 494 screens over four days.

Smith stars alongside Jaden Smith, the film’s real lead. M Night Shyamalan directed the story of a young explorer who must help his father after they return to an abandoned Earth. Major markets include the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Mexico and Brazil.

Warner Bros Pictures International’s The Hangover Part III ruled the roost last weekend following an $82.3m session. While there are no new major market launches, holdovers are expected to be robust in the absence of any other major Hollywood comedy. The early running total stands at $134.4m. The Great Gatsby has grossed $128.5m.

Universal Pictures International’s global smash Fast & Furious 6 raced past $500m at the worldwide box office in record time for the studio and has reached $342.2m internationally and $522.5m globally. The film arrived in Australia on Jun 6 and should have little trouble crossing $375m by Sunday.

Epic stands at $91.7m through Fox International and DreamWorks Animations’ The Croods has amassed $391.9m.

Paramount Pictures International’s Star Trek Into Darkness has amassed more than $147.4m, powered by last weekend’s Chinese debut and arrives this weekend in nine markets including Belgium, Portugal, Turkey and the Netherlands. G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens in Japan.
