American actress and Oscar-winner Meryl Streep will be awarded an Honorary Golden Bear at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival.
She will be presented with the lifetime achievement prize on Feb 14 at a screening of The Iron Lady at the Berlinale Palast in Berlin. There will also be a homage series during the festival featuring her works Kramer Vs Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, Out Of Africa, The Bridges Of Madison County, A Prairie Home Companion and The Iron Lady.
Streep’s relationship with the Berlin Film Festival began in 1999 when she was awarded the Berlinale Camera. In 2003, she shared the Silver Bear with Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman for their performances in The Hours. In 2006, she starred in Robert Altman’s Berlin competition film A Prairie Home Companion.
“We are delighted to be able to award the Honorary Golden Bear to such a terrific artist and world star. Meryl Streep is a brilliant, versatile performer who moves with ease between dramatic and comedic roles,” said Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick.
Meanwhile, the festival will also be celebrating the 100th birthday of Berlin based Studio Babelsberg, which is the oldest large scale studio complex in the world. The festival is putting on a special series entitled “Happy Birthday, Studio Babelsberg” which will feature ten films to have shot at the studio over the decades since it has been in operation.
The ten films to be screened in the series will be The Last Laugh (1924), The Blue Angel (1929/30), The Adventures Of Baron Munchhausen (1943), The Murderers Are Among Us (1946), The Rabbit Is Me (1965), Goya (1971), The House On The River (1985), Sun Alley (1999), The Pianist (2002) and The Reader (2008).
The Film Festival is also awarding Studio Babelsberg a Berlinale Camera award, which goes to a personality or institution who the festival feels particularly indebted.
