Toronto production shop The Film Farm is setting up a February shoot for Canadian filmmaker Peter Wellington’s next project, Journey To The Surface Of The Earth.
The romantic comedy follows a young lawyer falling to his death as he tries to makes sense of his life in the seven seconds before he hits the ground.
The production re-teams Wellington with Film Farm partners Jennifer Weiss and Simone Urdl, who produced Wellington’s 2002 title Luck. E1 Films Canada has the film for Canada while E1 International is selling it abroad. Speaking to ScreenDaily, Weiss pegged Surface’s budget at $6m. In terms of casting, she said, “We’re shooting for the stars.”
Also on Film Farm’s production slate is Brian DePalma’s Tabloid, a political thriller inspired by political and personal imbroglios of Democratic presidential nominee John Edwards – with a serial killer thrown in. Weiss described the project as exploring DePalma’s core themes: politics, sex and murder.
The busy duo have four projects at TIFF this year, including Atom Egoyan’s Chloe and Sook-Yin Lee’s The Year Of The Carnivore. As well, the company is packaging a new script from Carnivore’s Lee, Ferrate Is Dead, for which they are seeking a Spanish-language coproducer.
