Venice Horizons includes new works from Vincent Gallo, Guillermo Arriaga

The 67th edition of the Venice Film Festival has announced the Horizons (Orizzionti) line-up in an unexpected announcement a day ahead of the scheduled announcement tomorrow (29) of the Venice Film Festival programe.

Artistic director Marco Mueller has revamped his section to provide a more experimental space for film-makers, visual artists, and other artists while including what he called “extra format” works (not standard length). Mueller has created a section that offers shorts alongside medium-length and full-length features. The section offers prizes matched to each category – two for features and one each for a medium-length and short film.

The changes and the line-up reflect Mueller’s own taste for experimenting. In a statement he said the selection aimed to “privilege new horizons.”

As previously reported Orizzonti opens with Catherine Breillat’s fantasy version of Sleeping Beautyand closes with Oki’s Movie, a love triangle set in the present, past and the fictional world of cinema from South Korea’s Hong Sang-soo.

For the feature-length competitive section Mueller has selected a robust 21 films and documentaries including the long-in-the-works News From Nowhere, the latest from cult director Paul Morrissey, an alumnus of Andy Warhol’s Factory. John Akomfrah, co-founder of London’s Black Audio Film Collective, brings his UK-Ghana documentary co-production The Nine Muses, which traces the past of migrant workers through images and music.

From the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Germany comes the co-production Jean Gentil by Laura Amelia Guzman and Israel Cardenas who return after presenting Cochochi in the section in 2007. Their new film focuses on an elderly Haitian teacher who seeks to understand his place in the world. From China’s Huang Wenha comes Reconstruction Faith set in a Buddhist community.

Patrick Keiller brings the documentary Robinson In Ruins with Vanessa Redgrave voicing his third film inspired by the Robinson Caruso myth. 2008’s Orizzonti documentary winner Gianfranco Rosi brings his new documentary El Sicaro Room 164, in which a Mexican hitman looks back on his life as a killer for drug traffickers and the government. France’s F J Ossang, the alternative rocker, director and writer, brings Dharma Guns focusing on a man who awakens from a coma after an accident that took his girlfriend’s life, while Mexico’s Nicolas Pereda brings Verano Di Goliata, a violent social tale.

The 42 short to medium-length films run from five to 58 minutes long and include such works as Vincent Gallo’s The Agentfeaturing Gallo and Sage Stallone. Guillermo Arriaga’s El Pozorecounts an untold story from the Mexican revolution, while UK visual artist and director Isaac Julien’s Better Lifestarring Maggie Cheung will be unveiled. Set in China, the film weaves together stories linking China’s ancient past and present and was adapted from Julien’s ten-screen installation that premiered at the Sydney architecture biennale and the Shanghai Expo last spring.

Finally, Stardust features new scenes with the late Dennis Hopper from Belgium’s award winning visual artist and film-maker Nicolas Provost. The crime story takes place against the backdrop of the Las Vegas gambling scene and also features Jon Voight and Jack Nicholson.

The Venice Film Festival runs from September 1-11.
