OPENING NIGHT GALA: CAPTAIN PHILLIPS: Paul Greengrass’ hijack thriller starring Tom Hanks will get its European Premiere in London
CLOSING NIGHT GALA: SAVING MR BANKS: The LFF will close with the European premiere of the story of how Mary Poppins was brought to the big screen, starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.
PHILOMENA: Stephen Frears returns with the story of a woman (Judi Dench) searching for her adult son who was taken away from her decades earlier when she was forced to live in a convent. Steve Coogan co-stars.
INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS: Directed by the Coen Brothers, Oscar Isaac as a 1960s singer-songwriter in New York alongside Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake.
12 YEARS A SLAVE: Steve McQueen's follow-up to Hunger and Shame is eagerly anticipated. With a cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti, the film tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a freeman kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841.
GRAVITY: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as a medical engineer and a veteran astronaut stranded in space, in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi feature.
THE INVISIBLE WOMAN: Ralph Fiennes directs and stars as novelist Charles Dickens in his follow-up to directorial debut Coriolanus. Felicity Jones stars as Dickens’ secret lover, Nelly Ternan.
EPIC OF EVEREST: The BFI National Archive’s gala screening is the world premiere of the newly restored official film record of the legendary 1924 Everest expedition including a new score performed live by composer Simon Fisher Turner.
BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR: Drector Abdellatif Kechiche explores the passionate, chaotic love story between a 15-year-old girl named Adele and a sensual blue-haired girl who initially visits her in dreams. The French-language drama won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and stars Léa Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos.
NIGHT MOVES: US indie director Kelly Reichardt’s latest feature stars Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard as environmental activists who plot to blow up a hydro-electric dam.
STRANGER BY THE LAKE: Alain Guiraudie’s film centres on Franck, who falls in love with a murderer.
DON JON: Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrties, directs and stars in this story of a man who develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love, played by Scarlett Johansson.
MYSTERY ROAD: An indigenous detective returns to the Australian Outback to investigate the murder of a young girl. Stars Aaron Pedersen and Hugo Weaving.
ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE: Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston star as lovers over the centuries in Jim Jarmusch’s rock-and-roll vampire love story, which also features Anton Yelchin, John Hurt and Mia Wasikowska.
NEBRASKA: Descendants director Alexander Payne returns with another tale of family reconciliation. This time he trains his sights on the story of a hard-drinking father who drives with his estranged son from Montana to Nebraska to claim a sweepstakes prize. Bruce Dern stars.
WE ARE THE BEST!: Sweden's Lukas Moodysson directs this story of three 12 and 13-year-old girls who decide to form a punk band in 1982 Stockholm.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: ABUSE OF WEAKNESS: French director Catherine Breillat’s 14th feature is adapted from her own novel, Abus De Faiblesse, about her experiences with Hollywood hustler Christopher Rocancourt. Isabelle Huppert stars.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: THE DOUBLE: Richard Ayoade’s comedy follow-up to Submarine centres on a man who is driven mad by his more confident and charismatic doppelganger. Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn and Noah Taylor star.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: IDA: Polish director Pawlikowski - acclaimed for English-language films such as My Summer Of Love - makes his first Polish-language feature. Set in the early 1960s in communist Poland, Ida tells the story of a young woman who has to choose between the Catholic faith that saved her life during the Holocaust and the identity with which she was born.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON: Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda gets tells the story of a family thrown into turmoil after a phone call from the hospital where their son was born.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: THE LUNCHBOX: Hindi and English-language drama, starring Life Of Pi’s Irrfan Khan, which charts the fallout after a lunchbox is delivered to the wrong address.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: OF GOOD REPORT: An introverted high school teacher in rural South Africa starts an obsessive affair with a pupil, with tragic consequences. The film was initially banned by South African censor FPB [Film and Publication Board] and pulled from opening the Durban International Film Festival but the ban was subsequently lifted.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: PARKLAND: Journalist turned film-maker Peter Landesman makes his directorial debut with this drama set in Dallas’s Parkland Hospital after JFK’s assassination in 1963. The ensemble cast includes Zac Efron, Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton and Jacki Weaver.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: RAGS & TATTERS: Feature about the results of one night in Egypt when the prisons were suddenly opened, leaving thousands of prisoners wandering the desert. It centres on one man trying to find his way in a rapidly changing city.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: THE SELFISH GIANT: Clio Barnard’s follow up to her debut, The Arbor, centres on two teenage boys caught up in the world of copper theft.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: STARRED UP: A troubled and explosively violent teenager is transferred to adult prison where he finally meets his match, his father. Jack O’Connell and Ben Mendelsohn lead the cast in Young Adam and Hallam Foe director David Mackenzie’s uncompromising drama.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: TOM AT THE FARM: Director Xavier Dolan (Laurence Anyways) also stars in this film about a gay man who travels to the country to attend the funeral of his lover, only to discover no-one knew about his sexuality.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: TRACKS: Director John Curran tells the story of the 1,700-mile trek across the deserts of west Australia by Australian writer Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska) in 1977 with four camels and a faithful dog.
OFFICIAL COMPETITION: UNDER THE SKIN: Jonathan Glazer’s long-gestating third feature after Sexy Beast and Birth stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien taking on human form during a journey through Scotland.
