Denmark, Slovak Republic and South Africa picked up their first ever nominations as the 2002 International Emmy Awards contenders were announced on Monday by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Aside from the traditional seven categories of arts programming, children and young people, documentary, drama series, TV movies/mini-series, news coverage and popular arts there will be two special achievement awards. Katsuji Ebisawa, president of NHK Japan Broadcasting, will receive this year's Directorate Emmy Award while the Founder's Emmy Award will go to Sir Howard Stringer, chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Corporation of America.
Amid a heavy presence from the UK and several entries from France and Germany, Argentina's Caiga Quien Caiga picked up its third nomination in the popular arts category. Emmy co-chairman Larry Gershman said in a statement: "The International TV Academy's core mission is to encourage and promote quality global programming from around the world. It is most satisfying to have this year's nominees, that represents the best of international television, coming from many diverse countries of the world."
