Portuguese director Miguel Gomes’s romantic tale impressed critics in Berlin where it won the FIPRESCI award and the Alfred Bauer Prize for its innovative approach to storytelling.
Adopt Films plans a theatrical release in New York and LA in late December followed by general release in the first quarter of 2013. Co-managing executives Jeff Lipsky and Tim Grady negotiated the deal with Match Factory’s Brigitte Suárez and Michael Weber.
Gomes and Mariana Ricardo co-wrote the screenplay and Tabu stars Teresa Madruga, Laura Soveral, Ana Moreira, Carloto Cotta, Manuel Mesquita, Isabel Cardoso and Ivo Muller. Luís Urbano and Sandro Aguilar produced.
“Tabu is a dream come true for film fans who love blending perfect style with wonderful stories,” Lipsky said. “Film artistry in Portugal is alive and well.”
Adopt’s slate includes The Ballad Of Genesis And Lady Jaye, Mighty Fine and Nuit #1 and Café De Flore.
