Vaca Films to make English-language sci-fi horror based on best seller

Based on Juan De Dios Garduño’s best-selling novel Y Pese A Todo…, the film will be about a World War III, pitting the US, Great Britain and Israel against Iran, China and Russia. Welcome To Harmony will focus on chemical weapons that wipe out everyone in each country, except a father and daughter and their hated neighbour living in Bangor, Maine who have to confront unwanted visitors.

Vivas is currently writing the script for the project alongside Alberto Marini, former director of international productions at Filmax, who helped develop key titles at the studio including the [Rec] films, The Way and Sleep Tight.

“It’s an apocalyptic horror film in the mould of I Am Legend and 28 Days Later,” Vaca Films’ Borja Pena told ScreenDaily. “We are currently working on the script and so don’t have a shooting date or cast confirmed yet.”

Vivas’ high-impact horror/thriller Kidnapped, also co-produced by Vaca Films, caused a huge stir at the Sitges film festival in October and is selling well all over the world through Filmax, including IFC Midnight for the US. Vertice Cine will release the film on 25 February in Spanish theatres.

Vaca Films also co-produced Iciar Bollain’s multi-award winning drama Even The Rain, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, and are in development on Daniel Calpasoro’s Invasor, alongside Morena Films, about a Spanish military doctor who struggles with guilt after he survives an ambush in Iraq, and Manuel Sanabria’s Nowhere, about a private detective who searches for a young woman who mysteriously vanishes as she is writing a thesis on women that have disappeared.
