Berlinale unveils first 20 films in Panorama sections, with Indignados and Elles opening Panorama Special.

The Berlinale has announced the first 20 titles in the Panorama programme. That represents about a third of the features for the 50-strong section.

Two works by European directors will open Panorama Special, Tony Gatlif’s Indignados, about protests seen through the eyes of an illegal immigrant woman, and Malgoska Szumowska’s Elles, starring Juliette Binoche.

There are also selections including 10+10, which is a survey of works from Taiwan from 10 established directors (including Hou Hsiao-Hsien) and 10 newcomers.

Other highlights will include The Tin Drum director Volker Schlondorff’s first film since 2007, French-German co-production Calm At Sea; Brazilian filmmaker Cao Hamburger’s historical drama Xingu [pictured]; Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s noir thriller Headshot; Kirsten Sheridan’s Dublin-set teen drama Dollhouse; Julian Roman Pölsler’s feminist post-apocalyptic tale The Wall starring Martina Gedeck; and big-budget Korean epic My Way.

The Panorama Audience Award will be presented on the Berlinale’s final day, Feb 19.
