UK-based production and distribution house Fremantle has launched Undeniable, a new label for feature and series documentaries.

Sitting within Fremantle’s Documentaries division, Undeniable will develop and produce ‘premium’ projects according to the company. It will make high end international projects that come to Fremantle directly without going through their local territories.

Fremantle’s first-look deal with US filmmaker Amy Berg, announced last week, will fall under the Undeniable banner; Berg is currently in Copenhagen shooting for a film under the partnership.

The brand was announced at CPH:DOX today (March 21) in Copenhagen by Mandy Chang, Fremantle’s global head of documentaries.

Speaking in Copenhagen, Chang said the brand is ”already working with lots of the filmmakers at this very festival.” Undeniable consists of “a small team of creative execs”, all of whom are women, said Chang. “We chose this name because of what it stands for, which is truth and excellence.”

Undeniable’s ambition is “to make provocative, entertaining, diverse, and influential films and series that push the boundaries of storytelling and challenge assumptions about the world around us,” according to a Fremantle statement. “From investigative, geopolitical, and single narrative stories to cultural landmark films, contemporary history, true-crime and genre busting biopics on a global scale.”

“The launch of Undeniable will form part of Fremantle’s growth strategy to boost our capabilities in documentaries as we have successfully achieved in film and drama over recent years,” said Andrea Scrosati, Fremantle group COO and continental CEO.

“The label will provide editorial and production expertise and support in multiple genres,” said Chang.

Scrosati noted that the company’s various production companies delivered 52 documentaries last year. Those included Fremantle and Carnivalesque Films’ Kim’s Video, which debuted at Sundance Film Festival in January.

It has projects in the works with Deliver Us From Evil director Amy Berg, Tiger King filmmaker Chris Smith, and Penny Lane and Gabriel Sedgwick, the duo behind Hail Satan?.

Fremantle has recently taken majority stake acquisitions in the UK’s 72 Films and Wildstar Films, and Israel’s Silvio Productions.
