The Motion Picture Association Of America and Chinese-language video portal Shenzhen Xunlei Networking Technologies (Xunlei) have agreed on a partnership to protect Hollywood content.
Under the terms of a Content Protection Agreement (CPA), Xunlei will implement a content-recognition system that will ensure MPAA member content on the site is licensed.
The partners will work together to educate users of the effects of piracy, a problem that has blighted the Chinese portal for many years.
Last week Xunlei filed with the SEC for an IPO after it cancelled plans to go public in 2011 over fears that its software was being used for online piracy.
“The online video sector in China is moving purposefully toward an environment that will help sustain a viable, long- term online video business, ensure the creative work of rights holders is sufficiently protected, and provide audiences with a quality, legitimate viewing experience,” said MPAA svp and global general counsel Steven Fabrizio.
“With the largest number of internet users in the world, the Chinese market offers tremendous potential for content creators to make their works available online to hundreds of millions of consumers. This agreement is an important step forward in carrying out the MPAA’s mission in this significant market.”
