British actor Eddie Marsan (who stars in TIFF title Tyrannosaur) will direct his first feature Pell Mell, for Warp Films.

Marsan has written the script for the film, which he describes as “Shakespeare’s Richard III set in 1960s London”. He is also set to star.

The feature will be produced by Peter Carlton and Robin Gutch for Warp Films along with independent producer Laura Hastings-Smith.

Marsan told Screen he was “very excited” about making the move into directing, adding that it was regular collaborator Mike Leigh, for whom Marsan starred in Vera Drake and Happy Go Lucky, who encouraged him to get behind the camera.

“It is early days in terms of being at the start of the financing and casting process but we think Eddie has a brilliant vision for the film,” Peter Carlton told Screen.

Production is planned for 2012.

Meanwhile Marsan is starring in a number of high profile titles set to come out over the next 12 months including Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Sherlock Holmes 2. He has just finished shooting Jack The Giant Killer and is currently in production on Snow White And The Huntsman.
