John Krasinski will direct and star in The Hollars for Sycamore Pictures alongside Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins and Margo Martindale. Panorama will commence international sales on the Croisette.
The project stems from Krasinski’s Sunday Night label and will be produced by Tom Rice and Ben Nearn of Sycamore Pictures — whose credits include The Way, Way Back and the recently retitled Begin Again (formerly Can A Song Save Your Life?) — and Michael London of Groundswell.
Sunday Night’s Allyson Seeger will serve as executive produce alongside writer James C Strouse, and Groundswell’s Janice Williams.
Krasinski will play John Hollar, who gets yanked from the New York life he shares with his beautiful girlfriend back to his Middle America home town when his mother undergoes brain surgery.
Back in the place where his life began, Hollar must navigate the dysfunctional rhythms of his helpless brother, anxiety-prone father and over-eager high school girlfriend.
“This is one of the best scripts I’ve read, period,” said Krasinski. “Jim has written one of the most tough-minded, sweet, funny and accurate stories about family I’ve seen. I am lucky to have a script like this to direct… and to have this cast is simply surreal.”
“The script is so poignant, blending the emotion of Steel Magnolias with the youth-oriented relevance of Garden State,” said Rice. “The hairpin turns from laughter to tears are impeccably written, and John’s vision for the film will bring it to life in a very special way. I’m excited to be a part of such a special team – it’s been way too long since we’ve had a film like this.”
WME represents US rights. Sycamore Pictures’ upcoming films include Merry Friggin’ Christmas starring Robin Williams and Mississippi Grind with Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn.
The company recently boarded Autobahn as one of the financiers.
