Studio Hamburg Film Produktion and Switzerland’s C-Films are already planning another literary adaptation – based on Marie-Aude Murail’s 2007 novel Simple - as their first film project, Bille August’s screen version of Pascal Mercier’s bestseller Night Train To Lisbon, began principal photography began in the Swiss capital Berne at the weekend.
The story of Simple follows a 17-year-old boy who gets his older brother who has learning difficulties out of a care home and into a student flat.
Johannes W. Betz is adapting for German director Markus Goller whose offbeat comedy Eine Ganz Heiße Nummer posted over €8m for Universum Film at the German box-office last year.
Bloomsbury will publish the coming-of-age novel, retitled My Brother Simple, in August 2012. Simpel, the German translation of the French writer’s novel, was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 2008 and the novel has already been adapted as a French TV project.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Rampling and German actors August Diehl (The Counterfeiters) and Martina Gedeck (The Lives Of Others) are the latest additions to Night Train to Lisbon’s international cast which is headlined by Jeremy Irons, Melanie Laurent, Jack Huston, Bruno Ganz, Lena Olin and Christopher Lee.
The co-production by Studio Hamburg FilmProduktion and C-Films with C-Films Deutschland, Portugal’s Cinemate and Tele München is being handled internationally by K5 and will be moving this week to Lisbon where it will continue shooting until May.
