Principal photography has wrapped on Marc Munden’s Awol, following a six week shoot in and around Manchester.
Written by Lin Coghlan, whose credits include The Miracle and Kingfisher Blue, the film is about three brothers who, after social services split up the family, go in search of their estranged father.
It stars Thomas Sangster, who played the young Paul McCartney in Nowhere Boy, alongside newcomer Aaron Taylor.
Kindle Entertainment’s Sarah Feilden is producing, with Anne Brogan and Melanie Stokes executive producing. Munden won a BAFTA for the 2008 TV drama The Devil’s Whore.
Brogan said she is currently in talks with three UK distributors and is hoping for a late 2010 theatrical release.
Commissioned and funded by BBC Learning, viewers will be encouraged to go online and find out what might have happened with a different ending. The BBC have the UK television rights.
“Lin has a wonderful quality to her work, it is very real and touching and gives a voice to the kind of people you might cross the road to avoid,” said Brogan.
“The BBC wanted a really outstanding drama which would challenge young people’s thinking about themselves,” she added.
