Five-time Oscar winning composer suffers heart attack in New York.

Legendary English film and TV composer John Barry has passed away aged 77 after suffering a heart attack.

Barry worked in the film industry for over 50 years, beginning his composing career on the first James Bond film, Dr No, after a stint at record company EMI between 1959-62.

It was after this that Barry became associated with one the most famous theme tunes in film history, the James Bond Theme (which is officially credited to Monty Norman, but on which Barry played a major part).

The York-born composer went on to write 11 James Bond soundtracks, including Thunderball, Diamonds Are For Ever and Goldfinger.

His first Oscar was for the musical score to the 1966 film Born Free, which also won him a best song Oscar.

He went on to win three more Oscars for The Lion in Winter starring Peter O’Toole in 1968, Out Of Africa in 1985 and Dances With Wolves in 1990.

He is survived by his fourth wife, Laurie, whom he married in 1976, and by his four children.
