EXCLUSIVE: Film premiered as opening of Cannes Critics Week.
StudioCanal has acquired UK rights to Rufus Norris’ debut feature Broken. The UK drama had its world premiere as the opening selection for Cannes Critics’ Week 2012.
The film stars Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and Eloise Laurence.
Mark O’Rowe adapted the screenplay from Daniel Clay’s novel, about an 11-year old girl whose innocent vision of the world is shattered when she witnesses a violent assault.
The deal was negotiated by StudioCanal CEO Danny Perkins and Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch.
Perkins said: “We are delighted to be working with Rufus Norris on his first feature film Broken, a fresh and moving dramathat is sure to please UK audiences. At StudioCanal we strive to support and nurture the best in new British talent and Rufus is no exception.”
The film recently won the audience award at the Odessa Film Festival.
BBC Films and BFI present in association with LIPSYNC Productions and Bill Kenwright Films the Cuba Pictures production. Producers are Dixie Linder, Tally Garner, Nick Marston and Bill Kenright; executive producers are Joe Oppenheimer and Norman Merry.
Norris is an acclaimed theatre director (he will soon work on Dr Dee with Damon Albarn). He previously directed short film King Bastard, also produced with BBC Films.
StudioCanal’s other forthcoming releases include Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers, Jeremy Lovering’s In Fear, Michael Winterbottom’s Paul Raymond biopic, the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Susanne Bier’s Serena, Dan Mazer’s I Give It A Year, and Cuban Fury starring Nick Frost.
