The Social Network triumphs at London Film Critics' Circle Awards

The Social Network was the big winner at the 31st London Film Critics’ Circle Awards, picking up four gongs including Film Of The Year.

David Fincher was named Best Director, Aaron Sorkin won the Screenwriter of the Year award and Andrew Garfield picked up the Best Supporting Actor prize at the event, which took place at the BFI Southbank in London tonight (February 10).

The King’s Speech walked away with three awards; Best Actor for Colin Firth, British Director of the Year for Tom Hooper and The Attenborough Award for British Film of the Year, as well as being named runner up in the Film of the Year category to The Social Network.

Annette Benning was named actress of the year for The Kids Are All Right, whilst Lesley Manville walked away with the best Brtish actress award for her performance in Mike Leigh’s Another Year.

The best supporting actress award went to Olivia Williams for The Ghost, with Christian Bale named British Actor of the Year for The Fighter.

Gareth Edwards was named Breakthrough British Filmmaker for his critically acclaimed debut feature Monsters. The Young British Performer of the Year went to Neds starConor McCarren.

In the foreign language category, Xavier Beauvois’s Of Gods And Men beat off competition from runner up I Am Love to claim the prize.

Among the guests at the ceremony was Kristin Scott Thomas, who was presented with the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Cinema by Nowhere Boy director Sam Taylor Wood.

Rosamund Pike, Mike Leigh, Ruth Sheen, David Bradley, Luca Guadagnino, and J Blakeson, were also in the audience.

Chairman of the London Film Critics Circle, Jason Solomons, who hosted the event for the first time at the BFI Southbank in aid of new charity partner the BFI Archive, said he was “particularly thrilled to see Colin Firth again, continuing on his fine form of last year when he won for A Single Man.”

The Awards were presented in partnership with Sky 3D and Moët & Chandon.
