Skillset backing training/mentoring scheme for disabled filmmakers on the production.
Shooting started March 5 in Birmingham for teen comedy We Are The Freaks, directed by Justin Edgar and produced by Alex Usborne [pictured] at 104 Films.
The young cast includes Michael Smiley (Kill List), Rosamund Hanson (This is England), Jamie Blackley (Misfits), Mike Bailey (Skins), Sean Teale (Skins), Adam Gillen (Fresh Meat), Hera Hilmar (Anna Karenina) and Amber Anderson.
It will shoot for three weeks on a budget of £450,000.
Financing comes from Independent Media Investments and private equity. Screen West Midlands and the now-defunct UK Film Council backed development.
Skillset’s Film Skills Fund is supporting a production training scheme for eight disabled filmmakers who will receive bespoke training and mentoring in their chosen field (Camera, Sound, Costume, Make-up or Art Department) during the film’s production.
Dan Simmons, acting Head of Film at Skillset, said: “Following the success of 104’s Skillset-funded Magic 6 scheme we are pleased to be able to support their new training initiative linked to production. This new scheme will give eight disabled film makers the invaluable experience and skills they need to help them secure future employment within the film industry.”
