EXCLUSIVE: Cast rounds out on Ruby Films-Pathe drama about women’s suffrage movement.
Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson are the latest names confirmed for anticipated UK drama Suffragette, starring Carey Mulligan.
Whisaw and Gleeson join a stellar cast that also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff and Samuel West.
ScreenDaily yesterday broke the news of Meryl Streep’s part in the film as Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst.
Shoot gets underway in the UK on Monday (Feb 24) on the film produced by Faye Ward and Alison Owen of Ruby Films. Backers are Pathe, Film4 and the BFI.
Oscar-nominated Mulligan stars as Maude, a “foot soldier of the early feminist movement” who becomes radicalized and turns to violence as a route to change.
Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) directs Abi Morgan’s script, executive producers are Pathe’s Cameron McCracken and Film4’s Tessa Ross and Katherine Butler, while Chris Collins is lead exec for the BFI Film Fund.
Pathe will distribute in the UK and France and also handles international sales.
James Bond star Whishaw most recently garnered strong reviews for his performance in Sundance hit Lilting, while Gleeson drew raves at the same festival for John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary.
