Hong Kong sales and distribution outfit Golden Scene has picked up international rights to Barbara Wong Chun-chun’s upcoming docu-drama Break-up Club.
Starring Jaycee Chan (pictured) and Fiona Sit, the film revolves around a web-site, BreakupClub.asia, that allows users to win back lost loves, so long as they agree to break up another happy couple.
By blending fact and fiction, and featuring the production’s own director and crew, the film poses ethical dilemmas about modern-day relationships and the impact of the internet.
Break-up Club is produced by Wong, Lawrence Cheng and Gus Liem, with funding from the Hong Kong Film Development Council. Hong Kong release is scheduled for late March 2010.
In addition to Jaycee Chan and Fiona Sit, the film also stars Patrick Tang, Hiro Hayama and Bonnie Sin. Chan, the son of global superstar Jackie Chan, has won acclaim in dramas such as Kenneth Bi’s The Drummer and Jiang Wen’s The Sun Also Rises.
Wong is known for films that use humour to explore issues affecting Hong Kong women and the city’s Facebook-obsessed youth, including Women’s Private Parts, a documentary about the sex lives of Chinese women, and her most recent film, youth comedy Happy Funeral.
