The Guard picked up four awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter and the Irish Film Board Rising Star Award for its director John Michael McDonagh.

The Guard was the big winner at the Irish Film And Television Awards, scooping four awards including Best Film and Best Director for John Michael McDonagh.

McDonagh also won the Best Screenwriter prize as well as the Irish Film Board Rising Star Award for his feature directorial debut.

On the TV side, Irish crime drama Love Hate swept the board picking up seven awards including Best Drama, Best director and Writer.

Michael Fassbender was named Best Actor for his performance in Steve McQueen’s Shame, whilst Chris O’Dowd scooped the Best Supporting Actor prize for Bridesmaids.

Actresses Saoirse Ronan won for her performance as teen assassin in Joe Wright’s Hanna. Irish actress Fionnula Flanagan was the recipient of two awards - the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award as well as a Best Supporting Actress prize for her role in The Guard.

Northern Irish Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey was presented with the DOP Film/Drama award for We Need to Talk About Kevin and Consolata Boyle took home the Costume IFTA for her designs in The Iron Lady.

The winners of the 9th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards were announced at a Gala Awards Ceremony held at the Convention Centre Dublin on Saturday 11th of February 2012.

Speaking at the ceremony IFTA chief executive Áine Moriarty said “In what has been a wonderful night of celebration for the Irish film and television industry, IFTA is delighted to announce the winners of the 9th Irish Film & Television Awards.  Ireland’s film and television industry continues to punch above its weight in terms of production values, creativity and entertainment and the outstanding achievements of Irish directors, writers, actors, television and film makers has been showcased here this evening.”
