Barcelona-based Film Factory Entertainment has picked up international sales rights (excluding Benelux, US and Canada) to Dick Maas’ popular Dutch horror Saint, with LA-based XYZ Films handling North American rights.
The deal was sealed between Film Factory and the film’s producers Tom De Mol Productions and Parachute Pictures, who will present a screening of the film at the EFM.
Saint is an alternative take on the Saint Nicholas legend in which he is a brutal bishop who kills children, instead of giving them presents. The cast is led by Egbert-Jan Weeber, who plays a kid that tries to escape death, alongside other well known local actors Huub Stapel and Bert Luppes.
Saint took an impressive $4m at the box office in Holland at the end of last year through A-Film Distribution. Maas previously enjoyed success with other horror films such as Amsterdamned and The Lift. Producer Tom De Mol has also worked on other box office hits such as Killer Babes and Character (which won the best foreign-language film Oscar in 1997).
“Saint is a very original film which perfectly suits the slate of genre films that we want to bring to the marketplace. The high level of production and breathtaking action sequences make this a surprising horror film, pure entertainment. I’m glad such great producers have trusted in Film Factory as well,” says Vicente Canales, head of Film Factory Entertainment.
Director Dick Maas adds: “I’ve always believed that Saint would attract a worldwide audience and the first overwhelming response proves me right. Saint, like most of my other movies, is intended for a global audience and I’m confident FFE will play a pivotal part in making this happen.”
