WhileSpace Station's 55 weeks at thebox office may seem glacially slow relative to conventional releases, it waslightening quick compared with the progress of the first space-based Imaxtitle, The Dream Is Alive, thehighest grossing Imax film ever, which opened in 1985 and has grossed $150m todate.
Priorto its premiere in April of 2002, Space Station was pre-leased by 122 Imax cinemas - the most ever, and an indication of the increasing number of Imax cinemas. There are more than230 worldwide.
Suchfilms continue the educational role that established the Imax brand but whichthe company hopes to rely on less as it attempts to create a new theatricalrelease window for Hollywood event films, like The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.
