Spanish director Isabel Coixet’s Cannes competition title Map Of The Sounds Of Tokyo has been sold to Alta Films for distribution in Spain.
The deal was sealed between Alta Films and Imagina, which is handling sales of the film at Cannes.
Produced by leading Spanish outfit Media Pro, Coixet’s film tells the story of a young woman, played by Japanese star Rinko Kikuchi, who leads a double life working nights at a Tokyo fish market and days as a ruthless assassin. Leading Spanish actor Sergi Lopez (Pan’s Labyrinth) also stars.
Shot in Japanese and English, Coixet says the film was born of her fascination with contemporary Japanese culture and is infused with the atmosphere from the novels of Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto.
