Qissa director Anup Singh is working on an adaptation of UK author Paul Pickering’s novel Over The Rainbow. The film will be produced by Switzerland-based Saskia Vischer Productions.
Singh has been developing the script in collaboration with the author since September 2012. Principal photography on the English and Pashto-language film is expected to start in 2015.
Set in contemporary Afghanistan, Over The Rainbow revolves around a young American pilot for an aid-delivery airline and a mysterious Pakistani-Afghani woman who set out on a dangerous trip across the war-torn country.
“The mystical element of the characters’ journey, the mystery of who the woman is and the tragedy of Afghanistan drew me to this extremely visual story,” said Singh. “It feels very close to my style of storytelling as it ventures into the realm of magic-realism.”
According to Singh, one of the biggest concerns is to find a location for the film. “We may shoot in Turkey as much of the landscape and faces of people there are similar to Afghanistan,” he said.
Producer Saskia Vischer said: “This project is much larger in scope than Singh’s previous projects and we are looking at casting A-list American and British actors in the film.”
