The Aruba International Film Festival, which will run its inaugural event June 4-11, has announced several environmentally friendly initiatives.

AIFF, founded by Giuseppe Cioccarelli and Jonathan Vieira,said it wanted to “play an active role in preserving and protecting the beautiful ecosystem that defines the beautiful island nation of Aruba.”

The green plans include a partnership with Aruba’s Arikok National Park Foundation for AIFF to sponsor an Earth Day activity on April 22; to help reforest the Plantation Prins area; to construct a greenhouse for reforestation; and allowing Arikok to disseminate information at the festival.

Also, AIFF and host venue Paseo Herencia will  use recycling bins during the festival; offer reusable water bottles; encourage walking to venues; use recycled cups, napkins and paper products; and give guest tips for “going green” at the festival.

Attendees at the first festival in June will include Richard Gere, who will open the festival, receive a humanitarian awards and participate in an on-stage conversation session. More guests and the line-up will be announced in coming weeks.

Events will also include workshops led by film professionals to encourage young Aruban filmmakers.
