Edko Films’ Cold War swept the Hong Kong Film Awards on Saturday night, winning nine prizes including best picture.

The crime drama also scooped best director for newcomers Longman Leung and Sunny Luk, who also took the best screenplay award; best actor for Tony Leung Ka-fai; best new artist for Alex Tsui; and best editing, film score, sound design and visual effects.

Co-produced by Edko, Irresistable and Sil-Metropole Organisation, the film managed the rare achievement last year of being a hit both in Hong Kong and China, grossing $5.52m just in Hong Kong.

Apart from Cold War, only Pang Ho Cheung’s Vulgaria and Wong Jing’s The Last Tycoon won more than one award. Vulgaria took best supporting actor for Ronald Cheng’s performance and best supporting actress for Dada Chen. The Last Tycoon took prizes for best art direction and best original song.

Miriam Yeung was awarded best actress for her role in Pang Ho Cheung’s Love In The Buff. Other award winners included The Silent War, which took best cinematography; Nightfall (best new director for Roy Chow); The Great Magician (best costume design & make-up); and Chinese Zodiac, which landed Jackie Chan and He Jun the award for best action design.

Feng Xiaogang’s Back To 1942 took the award for best film from China and Taiwan.
