Atonement leads Golden Globe nominations

Charlie Wilson’s Warfollows with five, and Michael Clayton, No Country For Old Men and Sweeney Todd earn four nods each.

Seven films were nominated in the best picture (drama) category, indicating that three films tied in the fifth nominated position and proof that the field was wide open this year.

Notable omissions from the nominations list included Sean Penn’s Into The Wild, which failed to score anything but two music nominations, and Paul Thomas Anderson who didn’t get a director nomination despite a best picture nod for his There Will Be Blood.

Acclaimed actors who didn’t make the Globe cut included Laura Linney for The Savages, Brad Pitt for The Assassination Of Jesse James or Emile Hirsch and Hal Holbrook for Into The Wild.

Linney’s Savages co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman was nominated twice for lead actor in a musical or comedy for The Savages and for supporting actor in Charlie Wilson’s War. Cate Blanchett was a double nominee for lead actress in a drama for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and for supporting actress in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There.

Other films locked out included Once, Margot At The Wedding, Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead, 3:10 To Yuma and The Bucket List.

In the foreign language category, three of the nominees - The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, The Kite Runner and Lust, Caution - are ineligible for the same Academy Award category, showing the increasing internationalism of foreign-language film-making.

Hayden Panettiere, Ryan Reynolds and Quentin Tarantino joined HFPA president Jorge Camara to announce the nominees in Beverly Hills today (Thursday).

The awards will be handed out Jan 13.
