Johnnie To’s Life Without Principle scooped best director, best actor and best original screenplay at the Golden Horse Awards on Saturday (Nov 24), while Gao Qunshu’s Beijing Blues took best film and two technical awards.
While Lau Ching-wan won best actor for Life Without Principle, best actress went to Taiwan’s Gwei Lun-mei for Gf*Bf (Girlfriend Boyfriend). Best supporting actress went to Liang Jing for Design Of Death and best supporting actor to Ronald Cheng for Vulgaria. Design Of Death also picked up best art direction.
Taiwan’s Chang Jung-chi was awarded best new director for Touch Of The Light based on the life of blind pianist Huang Yu-siang. Huang, who plays himself in the film, was awarded Outstanding Filmmaker of the Year.
Lou Ye’s Mystery took best new performer for Qi Xi’s performance, along with the award for best original film score. Best screenplay adaptation went to Bao Jingjing for Love Is Not Blind. China Heavyweight took the best documentary award, while best short film went to The Home Gleaners.
In the technical categories, Beijing Blues was awarded best editing and cinematography. Tsui Hark’s Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate was awarded best visual effects and Soi Cheang’s Motorway took best action choreography. Best sound effects went to Nightfall, best make-up and costume design to The Bullet Vanishes and “DoReMi” from Romancing In Thin Air was named best original film song.
