New films by Constantine Giannaris, Sabine Bernardi and Iciar Bollain have been added as the organisers for the Berlinale’s Panorama are close to finalising the 2011 lineup for Berlin’s Panorama section. Also added is UK 3D film The Mortician (pictured).

Greek filmmaker Giannaris, who has been a regular visitor to the Panorama in past years and was in the Berlinale Competition in 2002 with One Day In August, is back this year with Man At Sea focusing on the fate of boatpeople from Afghanistan, while Spanish filmmaker Iciar Bollain’s Oscar contender Even The Rain looks at the past and present consequences of colonization. Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal plays an obsessive idealist who has sworn to direct a film about one of the world’s most iconic figures, Christopher Columbus, and is determined to overturn the myth of the arrival of Western Civilization in the Americas as a force for good.

Moreover, the Panorama will have the world premiere of Sabine Bernardi’s feature debut Romeos, a tragicomedy about a 19-year-old ‘transman’ who was assigned at birth to the female sex and is now in the phase of sexual adjustment to become a man. The BOOGIEFILM production with ZDF’s Das kleine Fernsehspiel will be handled internationally by Cologne-based sales agent Media Luna New Films

The subject of the coming of age of a boy in a girl’s body is also addressed by French director Celine Sciamma in her Tomboy ,which will have its world premiere in Panorama’s main programme.

Section head Wieland Speck promises evidence of new narrative styles in such debuts as Gustavo Taretto’s Medianeras or Jan Gassmann’s OFFBEAT as well as Gareth Maxwell Roberts’ 3D film The Mortician.

Moreover, the UK’s Kevin Macdonald will be coming to Berlin with Life In Day, produced by Ridley and Tony Scott, which was compiled from thousands of digital contributions to YouTube sent in from around the globe.
