Germany's Hannes Stoehr's third feature Berlin Calling which shoots in Berlin this week, is to be sold internationally by Beta Cinema.
Stoehr's third feature pivots on DJ Ickarus, aka Martin Karow who tours clubs around the globe with his manager and girlfriend. On the eve of their largest album release, Ickarus is admitted to a psychiatric clinic after overdosing at a gig.
DJ Ickarus is played by real-life techno DJ Paul Kalkbrenner, a noted artist on Berlin's bpitchcontrol label.
'We have used the fact that Paul is an internationally recognised artist and that should come over in the film,' says producer Karsten Aurich. 'The hero's travelling and constantly being on the road will be underscored here. The film will have a European dimension - that's why we have scenes of the DJ on tour in Amsterdam - but otherwise the heart and centre of the film is very much in Berlin.'
'I had thought about a making film on this subject for some time,' adds Stoehr, who also directed Berlin Is In Germany and One Day In Europe. 'I had always liked those films about musicians like The Doors or Walk The Line, or The Rose with Bette Midler. They are always about American or English musicians who are dead, but I'd asked myself why you couldn't do a portrait of a German musician. After all, Germans are very strong particularly in the field of electronic music.'
Sabotage Films and Stoehrfilm co-produce with broadcasters WDR and Arte with backing from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Filmstiftung NRW, the State Minister for Culture & Media (BKM), and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF). Movienet has German theartical release.
Beta Cinema sold Stoehr's One Day In Europe which premiered in competition at the Berlinale 2005.
