The British Academy has announced the films longlisted for its 2011 awards, with Black Swan and The King’s Speech leading the pack, recognised in 15 categories each.

Inception and Made In Dagenham followed in 14 categories each, and The Social Network was listed in 13 categories. In 12 categories each were The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Alice In Wonderland, True Grit, Shutter Island, and The Fighter.

BAFTA’s 6,300 members have voted in their first round, selected from 207 entered films and now will vote from 15 longlisted films for the actual nominees (to be announced Jan 18). Members then vote a final time to determine the winners (some categories are voted for by only the specialist chapter in their category), which will be announced on Feb 13.

Among the surprises for longlisted films, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo had an unexpectedly strong showing in 12 categories (plus The Foreign Language nomination detailed below).

Ben Affleck’s The Town also struck a chord with BAFTA voters, getting 11 mentions (tied with Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours).

Mike Leigh’s Cannes hit Another Year has a comparably slim tally in five categories, but those include the most prestigious categories such as Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Director.

Roman Polanski’s The Ghost, the UK-set thriller that recently won best film at the European Film Awards, was nearly snubbed, with only three categories longlisted.

British indies such as Four Lions, Monsters, and Tamara Drewe only were longlisted in one category each. UK homegrown hit StreetDance 3D isn’t longlisted yet, but the longlisted pack here doesn’t include two special prizes earmarked for British films.

Among multiple nominees, Leonardo DiCaprio is in the running for Lead Actor in both Inception and Shutter Island; Gemma Arterton is in the Leading Actress category for both Tamara Drewe and The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Likewise, Andrew Garfield is twice recognised in Supporting Actor category, for The Social Network and Never Let Me Go. Rosamund Pike is longlisted as both Lead Actress (Barney’s Version) and Supporting Actress (Made in Dagenham).

Three women from Black Swan — Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder and Mila Kunis — are all longlisted for Supporting Actress. Another trio of actresses is longlisted for Made In Dagenham — Pike, Miranda Richardson and Geraldine James.

Pete Postlethwaite, who died last week, is longlisted for his supporting role as Fergus ‘Fergie’ Colm in The Town.

It is also notable that two of those recognised for Leading Actress were in foreign-language films: Tilda Swinton in I Am Love and Noomi Rapace in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Four foreign-language titles are longlisted for screenplay awards: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Biutiful, I Am Love and Of Gods and Men.

Of UK distributors, Momentum has 45 mentions on the longlist, led by The King’s Speech, The Fighter and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, plus Another Year and Tamara Drewe.

Also, The British Academy has today unveiled the nominations for Best Film Not in the English Language. They are:

Biutiful
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
I Am Love
Of Gods And Men
The Secret In Their Eyes

That category’s nominations are announced ahead of the other nominations because it allows members a longer period to view the foreign films.

The BAFTAs will be awarded on Feb 13.
