Teddy Chen’s action thriller Bodyguards And Assassins scooped this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, winning eight prizes from its 18 nominations, although the much smaller drama Echoes Of The Rainbow also put up a brave fight by taking four awards.
Bodyguards, produced by Peter Ho-sun Chan and Huang Jianxin’s We Pictures, took best film, best director, best supporting actor for Nicholas Tse and five techical prizes.
Alex Law’s Echoes Of The Rainbow, a nostalgic drama that was recently an unexpected hit in Hong Kong, took best screenplay for Law’s script, best actor for Simon Yam, best new performer for Aarif Lee and best original film song (which was performed by Lee).
Wai Ying-hung (aka Kara Hui) took best actress for her role in Ho Yuhang’s At The End Of Daybreak, following similar wins for the film at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards and the Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong.
Best supporting actress went to Michelle Ye for Soi Cheang’s Accident, which premiered at Venice last year, while best Asian film went to Japan’s Departures.
The 29th Hong Kong Film Awards took place on April 18 and marked the end of the month-long Hong Kong Entertainment Expo.
