The animation factory has now seen all 13 of its films open at number one through Buena Vista as $66.7m pulled off the second biggest June launch behind Toy Story 3.
Kelly Macdonald voices the lead character Merida in the mother-daughter story set in the Scottish Highlands, while Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly play her parents. Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman directed.
Madagascar 3 fell to number two and has amassed $158m after three weekends. Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter produced a lacklustre launch in third place on $16.5m from 3,108 theatres.
Focus Features’ Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World fell well below expectations as last week’s Los Angeles Film Festival world premiere opened in tenth on $3.8m from 1,625 sites. Steve Carrel and Keira Knightley play star-crossed lovers who meet days before the world is about to be hit by an asteroid. First-timer Lorene Scafaria wrote and directed.
Prometheus in fourth place crossed $100m in its fourth session. SPC opened Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love on $379,000 from five for an excellent $75,800 per-site average.
Next weekend’s wide releases include Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper saga Magic Mike with Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer through Warner Bros; DreamWorks’ family drama People Like Us starring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks through Buena Vista; Universal’s comedy Ted from Seth MacFarlane; and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection through Lionsgate.
