AUGUST 24 UPDATE: Universal’s NWA biopic held on to top berth in its second weekend as an estimated $26.4m boosted the running total to an impressive $111.1m.
Sinister 2 opened at number three via Focus on $10.5m from 2,766 sites, which trailed the 2012 predecessor’s $18m number three debut by 41.6%, rising to 43.8% when the earlier launch is adjusted for inflation to $18.7m.
Fox opened Hitman: Agent 47 at number four on $8.3m from 3,261 venues. The 2007 Hitman arrived on $13.2m from 2,458, roughly 37.2% ahead of this weekend’s debut, rising to 47.8% when adjusted for inflation to $15.9m.
Action comedy American Ultra starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg opened via Lionsgate in sixth place on $5.5m from 2,778.
Paramount-Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation held firm at number two and stands at $157.5m after four weekends.
Psychological thriller The Gift, the maiden release from STX Entertainment, ranks seventh on $31m after three sessions.
Overall box office for the top 12 amounted to $85.4m and fell 37.2% against last weekend and fell 16.6% against the comparable session in 2014.
This week’s wide releases are: thriller No Escape via TWC starring Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and Piers Brosnan; and Warner Bros drama We Are Your Friends with Zac Efron.
