FEBRUARY 12 UPDATE: Fifty Shades Freed, Universal’s finale to its erotic drama franchise, dominated the competition in North America as it opened top on $38.6m despite scoring the lowest debut of the series.
Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan star in the R-rated release, which arrived in 3,768 venues, some 20% behind the $46.6m number two launch exactly a year ago of Fifty Shades Darker, and less than 50% of what Fifty Shades Of Grey achieved on $85.2m back in 2015.
Sony Pictures launched children’s film Peter Rabbit in second place on a decent $25m in 3,735 venues, while Clint Eastwood’s terrorism thriller The 15:17 To Paris opened third via Warner Bros on a limp $12.6m in 3,042.
Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle slipped three slots to four on $10m for $365.9m after eight weekends, and Fox’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure, added $6.2m for $49.2m and fell four places to number six in its third session.
In its second weekend horror film Winchester slipped four to number seven and a respectable 44% through Lionsgate/CBS Films on $5.2m for $17.3m. Pantelion opened rom-com La Boda de Valentina at number 20 on $1.1m
Box office for the top 12 amounted to $119.4m, up 67.7% on last weekend and down 54.1% on the comparable session in 2017 when The LEGO Batman Movie debuted top on $53m, followed by new arrival Fifty Shades Darker in second place on $46.6m
This week’s wide releases are: Marvel Studios’ Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman directed by Ryan Coogler through Buena Vista; animation Early Man through Lionsgate; and faith-based distributor Pure Flix’s Samson.
