UPDATED APRIL 20: Universal’s smash action release, which this weekend became the studio’s biggest global hit of all time on $1.152bn, held on to North American pole position on $29.2m for a confirmed $294.5m after three weekends.
Sony’s comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 starring Kevin James arrived at number two on $23.8m from 3,633 venues, which was down 25.2% against the $31.8m number one debut of the original in January 2009 and down 32% in real terms against the 2009 inflation-adjusted $35m debut.
Universal’s horror film Unfriended opened at number three on $15.8m from 2,739, while Disneynature’s documentaryMonkey Kingdom arrived at number eight on $4.6m from 2,012 via Buena Vista.
Fox Searchlight’s Sundance premiere and crime mystery True Story starring Jonah Hill and James Franco opened at number 11 on $1.9m from 831, while Lionsgate’s Soviet-era crime thriller Child 44 with Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman opened on $621,000 from 510.
Overall box office for the top 12 fell 10.8% against last weekend and dropped about 9.9% versus the comparable session in 2014.
This week’s wide releases are Lakeshore’s drama The Age Of Adaline via Lionsgate and drama Little Boy through Open Road.
