APRIL 13 UPDATE: Universal’s global blockbuster – now at $801.5m – soared to $251.5m on the back of a confirmed $59.6m second weekend number one hold.
The behemoth added $198.7m internationally and is well on course for $1bn worldwide. The franchise has now grossed more than $3.18bn worldwide.
Nothing else came close in North America as DreamWorks Animation’s Home held firm in second place via Fox on $18.5m for $129.1m after three sessions.
Fox’s romance The Longest Ride starring Britt Robertson, Scott Eastwood and Jack Huston arrived in third place on a decent $13m from 3,366 that cues up the ancillary runs.
The notable top 10 news outside Furious 7 came from two climbers. New kid on the block Bleecker Street, the New York-based distributor launched by former Focus Features co-CEO Andrew Karpen, expanded Danny Collins in its fourth session.
The light drama starring Al Pacino as a charming ageing rocker went from 85 to 739 venues and vaulted eight places to number nine on $1.5m for $2.4m.
Noah Baumbach’s While Were Young with Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried climbed four slots to number 10 via A24 after expanding from 34 to 246 theatres in the third weekend, earning $1.4m for $2.4m.
A24 opened Alex Garland’s feature directorial debut Ex Machina in four sites and the sci-fi grossed $250,000 for a terrific $62,500 average.
Clouds Of Sils Maria, the drama that made Kristen Stewart become the first American actress to win the César (for best actress), opened via IFC on $61,810 in three sites for an impressive $20,603.
Box office for the top 12 dropped 42% against last weekend and fell approximately 5% against the comparable session in 2014, when Captain America: The Winter Soldier held at number one in its second weekend on $41.3m and Rio 2 opened in second place on $39.3m.
This week’s wide releases are Sony’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 starring Kevin James; Universal’s horror film Unfriended; and Buena Vista’s documentary Monkey Kingdom.
