Studio executives have another cause for celebration in what has become a banner year as the monster hit joined an elite club at the weekend and the studio itself crossed $6bn worldwide.
Jurassic World on Saturday became the fourth film to cross the $1bn international box office barrier as it reached $1.003bn.
Only Avatar ($2.027bn), Titanic ($1.528bn) and Universal’s Fast & Furious 7 ($1.162bn, earlier this year) have gone higher.
The film added $2.7m from 29 territories over the weekend. The worldwide running total of $1.651bn means it ranks number three in the all-time pantheon and is the biggest release of the year-to-date.
Universal’s $3.886bn international running total and $2.157bn North American tally pushed the studio to $6.043bn worldwide. No other studio has crossed $6bn
