UPDATE: Mission: Impossible – Fallout starring the evergreen Tom Cruise ruled North American box office at the weekend, storming to top spot on a confirmed $61.2m.
Combined with a world-beating $155.8m global launch, this was a fine weekend for Paramount, whose action thriller scored the highest North American debut of the six-film, 22-year franchise when unadjusted for inflation.
In real terms it ranks as the third highest debut in the series after Mission: Impossible II ($57.8m May 2000 equates to $84.93), and Mission: Impossible ($45.4m in May 1996 equates to $73.1m).
Christopher McQuarrie wrote and directed a cast that includes Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill, and Angela Bassett. The film opened in 4,386 theatres.
Last weekend’s champion The Equalizer 2 fell 61.1% and two slots to number three through Columbia Pictures, adding $14m for $64.3m. Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again dropped a respectable 56.8% in its second session and held firm in second place on $15.1m for $70.5m. The 2008 original finished on $144.1m.
In its third session, Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation fell 48.4% and added $12.3m for $119.2m. It dropped one place to number four. The second film remains the highest grossing in the franchise on $169.7m back in 2015.
Warner Bros’ family film Teen Titans Go! To The Movies debuted in fifth place on $10.4m from 3,188 sites.
Disney/Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man And The Wasp and Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are approaching significant milestones and stand at $183.5m after four sessions and $397.5m after six, respectively.
Chinese fantasy mystery Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings debuted at number 26 in 31 sites through Well Go USA, grossing $126,929 to complement the $42.9m China bow.
SPC opened recent Edinburgh International Film Festival opening night selection and Sundance entry Puzzle starring Kelly MacDonald. The drama arrived at number 34 on $61,214 from five sites.
Weekend box office for the 12 amounted to $146.2m, marking a 9.1% drop against last weekend yet a 5.8% gain on the comparable session in 2017.
This week’s wide releases are: Disney’s Christopher Robin with Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell; Lionsgate’s action comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon; Fox’s sci-fi thriller The Darkest Minds; and documentary Death Of A Nation via Quality Flix.
