NOVEMBER 16 UPDATE: Sony, MGM and EON Productions’ spy thriller held on to top berth as the running total climbed to $130.7m after two sessions, while Universal launched Angelina Jolie’s By The Sea in a lacklustre limited debut.
On Imax, James Bond delivered $3.8m from 374 screens in North America and $13m worldwide as the global tally climbed to nearly $40m.
Fox’s The Peanuts Movie edged closer to $100m following a number two hold that generated $24m for $82.3m.
The CBS Films comedy Love The Coopers starring Diane Keaton, Alan Arkin and John Goodman arrived in third place on a solid $8.3m from 2,603 venues.
Of the other new releases to break into the top 10, Warner Bros released the Chilean mine disaster drama The 33 – a monster hit in Chile this year – at number five on $5.8m from 2,452 theatres.
Bollywood sensation Prem Ratan Dhan Payo stormed in at number eight on $2.8m via Fox International Productions.
The film grossed $30.1m from seven international markets via Fox International this weekend and set the biggest debut of all time for a Bollywood film in India on $26.5m.
Clarius Entertainment’s drama My All American starring Sarah Bolger and Aaron Eckhart arrived at number 12 on $1.4m from 1,565 sites.
By The Sea, the third film directed by Angelina Jolie in which she stars opposite husband Brad Pitt, arrived at number 31 through Universal on $96,250 from 10 sites.
Overall box office for the top 12 amounted to $96.4m and fell 36.4% against last weekend when Spectre launched. The session dropped 25.6% against the comparable period in 2014, when Dumb And Dumber To opened top on $36.1m and Big Hero 6 and Interstellar both generated $28m-plus second-weekend holds.
This weekend’s wide releases are Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 starring Jennifer Lawrence; Sony’s Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt comedy The Night Before; and mystery The Secret In Their Eyes, which marks the second release from STX Entertainment and stars Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julia Roberts.
