Paramount’s children’s comedy The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water arrived in grand style thanks to an estimated $56m that scored the fifth biggest February launch of all time.
Warner Bros opened sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending in third place on a lacklustre $19m and Legendary-Universal’s fantasy epic Seventh Son debuted in fourth place on a disappointing $7.1m.
Both films were in action on Imax, with the former grossing $2.2m from 334 and Seventh Son grossing $665,000 from 337 screens.
American Sniper fell to number two and has amassed $282.3m after seven sessions through Warner Bros. Paddington ranks fifth via TWC and stands at $57.3m after four.
Overall box office for the top 12 of $139.3m gained 64.8% on last weekend and less than 1% on the comparable session in 2014.
This week’s wide releases are Fifty Shades Of Grey via Focus Features and Kingsman: The Secret Service through Fox.
